There is no way to avoid learning in the library environment so it was very nice to have the opportunity to learn a few new things while not on the floor of a busy library. When I looked back at thing 1 I see that somewhere along the line I have picked up some sort of adware that has inserted an unwanted link, Great! now I have to figure out how to get rid of that. There will probably be one in this post as well. That is the one thing about code that really makes me mad. I have certainly learned at lot but the one thing I learned and keep learning everyday is that I know absolutely nothing. Everything is subject to change and time not withstanding, will continue to challenge me. O.K. that's good- looks like I got rid of the bad link on this Thing- onward and here is one more link :-)">LOVE<

I was so excited byt his thing! Not only was the Assignment Calculator such a cool thing that the day I looked at it I went right out to the floor and showed it to three students who had just begun a career paper for their English teacher. Then i went to the English department meeting to tell them about it and the next thing I knew I was teaching an inservice for all teachers beginning next month. Then along comes my day of looking at the Research Project Calculator and I have a whole new seet of resources for my inservice. Nicely, the RPC includes lots of teacher resources that will no doubt be widely used! thanks NEFLIN

This one was a lot of reading and digging. I found one site that is of interest to llibraries and that is bookswing where people can join like netflix and get books delivered to their home- not a big deal EXCEPT that it includes textbooks. So if you are taking an on-line class that requires 2 textbooks and 3 others to read- you could get by with 60 dollars in bookswing subscriptions verses probably hundreds to buy the textbooks. Just a nice thing to be able to tell patrons about who are always looking for textbooks in the public library.

I have been a member of a ning since August '08 and understand the benefits for use among this county's media specialists get a lot done without having to ever meet on that site. But my eyes were opened when I took a look at the two food sites mentioned! So much stuff I want to know. I also went directly to the food prep teacher to show her those sites. I see that there are social networking sites and will make an effort to find them and pass them along. Thanks 23 things!

I joined facebook earlier this year simply because my son in law sent me an invitation. (I secretly thought that I would see lots of pictures of my beautiful grandaughter, whom I am completely in love with) Well, there was only one picture so I thought I would up the ante and added more. Before I was finished with that, someone else saw my name and befriended me and it has been a whirlwind ever since. While I am not on it as much as most of the people who I hear talking about it, I do check it regularly and have found that many of my coworkers are on as well- we chit chat occasionally and it is interesting to see what is written on the wall :-) I am a member of the Mystic Bean Coffee Company because I loved the coffee- it has since gone out of business! I see another librarian sends out the library events and invites her friends to stop by and check out items. It has been pointed out to me that it would be a great place to provide youth programming as it is already the site they access regularly and they might not look at the library's website regularly. Great thoughts come from young minds!

I love youtube. The commoncraft things are ones I have used in presentations and I love the library jokes too. There isn't much you can't find on youtube- all the science teachers use it!

I looked and looked but still like igoogle. It is just so easy to use and change as my role changes and the semesters move along. As the economy shrinks our jobs expand :-) with more and more being asked of us. It has been fun finding things that I can use to help create infomercials and brochures for upcoming events!

This was fun! I love library thing, it is a lot like a shelfari account on facebook where I can see what my friends read and say about what they read. This is even larger but I am not sure of a work application for it. I will have to read a few blogs and see if anyone came up with a functional idea.

I like the idea of wikis and see that they can be useful. The public library has one set up that they use occassionally. We have a tech guru at Creekside High School who set up a ning that does a ton or organizing for the school media specialists The wiki can be cumbersome if you are addressing more than one topic at a time. We have also had issue with people making changes that others were unaware of and that had to be fixed by using the strike through option for changes.

I have a Digg account and had it linked to my blog earlier but like Bookdiva, I see it as more pop culture and everyday there would be something on it that I didn't want people to think I agreed with SO I changed it to the New York Times Science articles. I truly love science and think it is a better reflection of me on my blog. I also like Newsvine but find that I find the New York Times and Wall Street articles more interesting so I just go with those. I read both through my igoogle account which is something not yet mentioned. I love the way I can set it up to get so many different things daily that interest me. Even the thematic picturescape at the top!While the articles have not really enhanced anything I do at the public library, I often find things that I pass along to the teachers at my school in my capacity as the high school 'media specialist' -funny title!

I love texting and chatting for two reasons. There is always time to be doing something else and you can send a message without interrupting someone with a ringing phone. It comes in very handy when there is a baby in the house that you don't want to wake- just text! We have downloaded Skype in the media center but I don't know if I think there is any real advantage to video verses voice. I have both a google talk account and a Facebook so I see the advantages and the fun aspects of instant messaging.

This was fun and once again a partnership project. I could have a lot of fun with this technology if I just had the time. I can see teaching students to create things with this techno and using it as a learning vehicle for a number of subjects. and a great thing to be able to use to liven up a powerpoint or just add a chuckle to a talk that might otherwise be a tad boring! Thanks

Well I feel pretty mashed up about now.. It was fun to create the words but finding a way to post them here, well that was something else again. I can see how wonderful it would be to be able to create something from each one of the mash ups available but it reallt fell apart for me when it came to application. I suppose I will have to ask someone under 30 for help :-) well, help came from someone slightly over 30 :-)

This is a wonderful way to showcase an event. We have used it on the website for about a year now. I like picasa for manipulation of images online better but any of them will do the job. Pictures are interesting to just about everyone and will help draw attention to upcoming events and is a great visual journal of the year when you look back at accomplishments. Weeeeeee here we go! RSS feeds are coming our way very soon I think. There is so much going on in the library field that it can be mind boggling for us as well as our patrons. I can see the reservation queues running to the thousands as patrons get the "feed" telling them the newest DVD's available. I also see how technology will have a huge impact on the acquisition habits of public libraries as patrons' demands change. The library of my childhood is long gone and will never be seen again. It seems a little sad but the children of today would never look forward to visiting a place of the type that was the castlekeep of my dreams. A child of today has far different needs and in order to hold a place in their life we need to grow anew.

Oddly enough the technorati link would not let me log into my blog but when I went to it directly it logged in just fine. These are the kind of foilbles that keep many from pressing forward. Years ago (15+) I knew a woman who finished her Phd in educational technology and it was a joke that nothing ever worked for her. That was the case at least the first time, eventually she would figure it out but no one remembers that only that it didn't work. She is long retired but I still hear that lament occasionally. the persistance it takes to find another way is sometimes the downfall in libraries. There is WAY too much going on and all at the speed of sound on a public desk which is not always the place to be troubleshooting. It is so much easier when it is a hardware issue and you can crawl under a desk and pull and plug until you get it fixed. Everyone can see you are unavailable for the moment, not so with many other snafus.

It seems that the more we avoid being touched by new technology the harder it is for us to comprehend the connectivity aspects of information. I have spent a few days looking for a way to transfer my social living bookshelf from my facebook account to this blog to no avail (I even resorted to asking a graduate student). You'll notice it is not there yet but there is a cute little valentine dog that you can pop the hearts on for a few weeks.... widgets, gadgets et al.....

Time is always an issue in schools. I find that new technology is only implemented when teachers are ready to try something new. So, the trick is to be ready to help with whatever they want when they want it! I think that this experience (23 things) is a jumping off point for me to begin using some of the items that I will be asked to teach others in the near future. I also find that I can never find the time to play around with things unless I am formally enrolled in a learning environment. There is always something else pressing to take me away from the task. This way I will be obligated to stick with it until I learn.

Well, this was certainly a murphy's law day. I began reading the directions for registering before 9 am and am just posting at 6:41 pm. ! There were 3 power outages at school while I was trying to set up my blog and finished just in time to run to the next job at the public library :-) I was surprised to find that it recognized my initial i-google account and password so I didn't need to recreate that. This is my first blog although I have been involved with a ning for a little bit, they seem similar so far. I have a few doubts as to whether all went through as I planned....
